As I walked further I began to see stacks of old books that people did not read for a long time. Eventually I reached the back area which had an open area with wooden chairs in semi circle. The chairs looked very old as I had never seen a school chair just made of wood before. I thought this place would be great to study so I put my books on top of a chair and sat down.
After a few moments of studying, I heard the words, "Get out!" It sounded like someone was really angry and shouted it up close into my ear. I got spooked and collected my books and left. When I got into the main area of the library with the loud people I felt foolish for being scared and I decided to go back to where I was studying.
When I arrived back I could hear the water pipes hissing from steam heat and I told myself that I must have mistaken the hissing noise as the ghostly threat. So I left the library. For years, I blocked this memory as it was quite disturbing for me. I know steam heating does not sound like "Get Out!" And if it did it would not sound like someone angry shouting into your ear.
I never returned to the town library again and chose to study at home or at the university where it was loud, but less haunted.
